KUALA LUMPUR: Haqqullah Ahmad Shahrul Zaman, star player of Selangor Red Giants (SRG), revealed his parents' initial apprehension when he pursued eSports as a professional gamer.
However, Sekys, as he is fondly known, has now become the biggest name in Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) after leading SRG to victory at the Mid-Season Cup (MSC) in Riyadh last week.
SRG claimed a substantial US$1 million (RM4.66 million) prize for their win, with Sekys also earning an additional US$50,000 (RM233,787) for being named the most valuable player (MVP) of the tournament.
"At first, my parents were hesitant about my career choice. They needed to see me succeed in lower-tier tournaments before fully supporting me," said the 18-year-old Sekys upon returning with his SRG teammates at KLIA on Wednesday.
"They provided me with essential equipment, including a phone, to help me improve."
Sekys said not everyone understands MLBB, including his parents initially.
"They began to take notice after my tournament wins, but I still had to explain the game to them."
Offering advice to MLBB enthusiasts, Sekys emphasised the importance of discipline and maintaining a balanced lifestyle for success.
"I don't take many breaks, even during festive seasons, because of my training."
When asked about his newfound fame after the Riyadh victory, Sekys remained humble.
"I don't see myself as a star. Despite the winnings, I am eager for more success.
"I don't think I've reached idol status yet. My teammates played a crucial role in our victory in Riyadh," he added.
