From local legends to world champs

KUALA LUMPUR: It has been an electrifying year for Malaysian eSports, with historic achievements both at home and abroad.

The Selangor Red Giants (SRG) came to the fore with rousing performances in Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB).

Though SRG finished third in Season 12 of the MLBB Professional League Malaysia (MPLMY) last year, they rebounded with a bang.

This came after SRG rebuilt their team and overhauled their roster. They went on to achieve success home and abroad.

SRG dominated MPLMY Season 13 earlier this year, going 12 games undefeated to lift the crown.

They became the first team to win the league undefeated.

SRG carried that momentum to the Mid Season Cup, which was also part of the eSports World Cup in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in July, extending their unbeaten run to 18 games en route to becoming the first team from Malaysia to win an international title.

They created more history by winning Season 14 of the MPLMY as the first back-to-back league champions ever.

Four players from SRG went on to represent Malaysia at the World eSports Championships, also in Riyadh, and won the nation's first world eSports title in November.

However, their fairytale run was cut short at the M6 World Championships at Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil this month. Their gruelling schedule caught up with them and they could only finish third.

SRG are not the only team to make the nation proud this year.

Black Shrew Esports carved their own historic chapter in Malaysian eSports history in October by winning the Honour of Kings World Championships in Jakarta.

Just last week, Ahmad Muhaimin Abd Razak, better known as Minbappe, won the FIFAe World Cup in the efootball mobile category in Riyadh.

With RM20 million announced in Budget 2025 for the development of eSports in the country, Malaysia is well wired up for more successes on the international scene.
