Bryan Leong breaks Sukma record twice in one day

KUCHING: Federal Territories (FT) swimmer Bryan Leong bettered the Malaysia Games (Sukma) 50-metre butterfly record twice in one day at the Pandelela Rinong Aquatics Centre today.

In the morning preliminary round, Bryan broke Jie Chan's record of 25.13 seconds with a time of 24.81s.

Then in the final, he improved on that time by posting 24.46s to win gold ahead of Penang's Chris Chew (24.94s) and Johor's Bernie Elle (25.17s).

The 21-year-old, who also holds the national record of 24.08s set this year, said: "I'm quite happy with winning gold for FT but the timing... you can always hope for better.

"I was trying to improve my national record, but I was quite happy to come away with a meet record twice.

"My next individual event is the 100m butterfly, and I will try to break my national record in that event," Bryan said.

Sarawak's Hii Puong Wei was the other Sukma record breaker today as he blazed the pool in the 200m backstroke, posting two minutes 06.59s to erase Tern Jian Han's record of 2:07.02s set in 2014.

FT's David Lee won silver (2:11.32s) while Aslan Adnan from Selangor (2:11.44s) won bronze.
