Zahid keen to see Malaysia host more international esports events

KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is hoping more esports organisers will choose to hold their events in Malaysia.

Zahid said Malaysia continues to invest in esports development here and has the credentials to become good hosts for esports events.

He was speaking before the Grand Final of the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) M6 World Championship at Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil today (Dec 15).

"The Malaysian government has allocated RM20 million for esports for next year," said Zahid.

"This is only the beginning, I hope in the following years the budget will be doubled, if not more.

"Malaysia is hosting M6 this year and we would also like for other organisers to choose Malaysia in the future. We will be the best host for any esport."

Moonton Games, the developer of MLBB, has announced that Indonesia will host the M7 World Championship in January 2026.

The world meet has been pushed to January 2027 due to the Thailand Sea Games, which will be held in December next year. MLBB is set to be the main esports title played at the Sea Games.
