Abidin vows to continue to be the voice of people in Sungai Bakap

NIBONG TEBAL: Newly-elected assemblyman Abidin Ismail has thanked all voters who had voted for him in the Sungai Bakap by-election today.

He said his win, with a bigger majority, signalled the people's protest against the government's actions.

"Alhamdullilah, I want to thank everyone, especially the Perikatan Nasional election machinery from all over the country for all their help.

"I also want to thank the Pas leadership for their trust place in me.

"I managed to win with a bigger majority.

"This majority is a protest by the people for the government's actions," he told newsmen after being announced as the new assemblyman for the Sungai Bakap state seat tonight.

Abidin vowed to continue to be the voice of the people by championing issues raised during campaigning in the by-election.

"Most importantly, the water disruption issue faced by the people in Mukim 5," he added.

Perikatan Nasional has retained the Sungai Bakap state seat in Penang after Abidin won 14,489 votes defeating Pakatan Harapan's Dr Joohari Ariffin who gained 10,222 votes.

Abidin leads with a majority of 4,267 a higher majority compared with the state elections last August.

The official result for the Sungai Bakap state seat was announced by returning officer Khairulnizam Hashim at 9.30pm at the Dewan Serbaguna Jawi here.
