#Showbiz: Sheila Majid set to jazz up Sabah with big band spectacle, captivating audiences of all ages

KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Sheila Majid did not waver when asked whether her songs would resonate well with the younger generation.

Despite having been in the industry for almost four decades, Malaysia's Queen of Jazz, with her soulful voice, was astonished that even the younger demographic attended her recent concert in Jakarta.

Recalling the enthusiastic response from teenagers, she pondered whether they indeed recognised her.

"When I started singing 'Sinaran,' the 15 and 16-year-olds were the ones jumping up and running up. Do they know who I am?

"Many young people nowadays appreciate music that was made before the music today.

"They told me that the melodies from the 80s are rich, and the lyrics are meaningful in comparison to what is produced today," she said during a press conference for her upcoming event, "Sheila Majid Big Band Live in Sabah," held here yesterday.

To Sheila, music is not merely entertainment but a form of art that should move and transcend.

"To me, art has to move you and come from a person. That's why I prefer music that is played by human beings.

"The dynamics of the music would transcend and move you; that is my personal preference," she said, adding that she takes pride in ensuring that the album she releases is one she is fully satisfied with before sharing it with her fans.

For the upcoming 20-song concert at the Sabah International Convention Centre on August 12, Sheila aims to deliver a concept that breathes new life and fresh vibes into her songs.

Accompanying her will be 16 musicians consisting of seven horn players, seven-band musicians, and background singers led by maestro Mac Chew.

Sheila had previously visited Lahad Datu, Sandakan, and Tawau during her music tour in the 1980s. She also held a legendary concert in 2010 and a private event in 2019.

"I'm sure I have fans here waiting to see me perform. I would love to come here with a good concept and fresh vibes to my songs."

When asked about the Big Band concept, she said the style adds a refreshing touch to her usual jazz-pop repertoire.

Sheila added that the concept is reminiscent of artists like Frank Sinatra.

Contemporary artists like Michael Bublé and Justin Timberlake have also embraced the big band style.

Tickets are now available at https://smlkk.qtic.my/ with prices ranging from RM238 to RM738.
