#SHOWBIZ: Radio DJs Ean and Haniff set to fly higher

RADIO announcers Ean Nasrun and Haniff Hamzah have been friends for a long time, but have never worked at the same station.

Although they were from the same parent company, they were not exactly working side by side — Ean with the English language radio Hitz, while Haniff with Era.

Being friends, the idea of working together had cropped up many times whenever they got together in the past.

In fact, according to Haniff, they've been talking about it for the past 10 years.

"But it never occurred to us that this 'dream' would finally come true. At most, I thought then, we might probably collaborate to do our own podcast," shares the 40-year-old Haniff.

Lo and behold, as of Aug 5, both Haniff and Ean have started to host the morning show on Fly FM called "EH! It's Ean and Haniff on the Fly Breakfast".

"Joining the station feels like a homecoming," shares Ean, also 40.

Known for his humorous community-focused content, Ean shares that his switching workplace had been mainly because of Fly FM's unique direction and the initiatives it had been coming up with.

He explains: "It's not so much about me wanting to leave my former radio station, but it's more about wanting to join Fly.

"The radio station reflects the people's and my personal sentiment, showing true social awareness.

"I was in awe of their campaigns, such as '24 Hours of Hind's Hall', '#MacklemoreInMalaysia' (to persuade the pro-Palestinian artiste to perform in Malaysia) and even marching in pro-Palestine rallies.

"These are significant reasons why I want to make this move, therefore being a part of Fly FM's direction to be the most talked about English radio and content brand in Malaysia."

He adds: "Having been a radio DJ for the past 20 years, it's become a little difficult to excite me. But this new challenge certainly does."

As for his new breakfast show partner Haniff, it's all about challenging himself.

Haniff had been DJ'ing for a Malay radio station for 16 years.

This transition will mark his debut helming a show on an English-medium radio station. The switch from a Malay to English language radio station is an unprecedented move in the Malaysian commercial radio industry.

"I've been wanting to do it for some time now," he shares.

"It's going to be a challenge but the project at Fly FM, focusing on memorable and community-orientated content, excites me," says Haniff, who admits that he was a little nervous about helming a show in English.

Although he is bilingual and has been taking hosting jobs in English when time permits, he is nervous about the significant change.

"It's definitely a big leap in both my career and personal life.

"For years I've been known as a radio DJ at a Malay station, and I've peaked there. So what now?"

The only obvious answer is for him to try out somewhere else by doing something slightly different.

"This will be like a new world to me. Those who listen to English stations might know who this Haniff is. That's one challenge I like to take on now," he shares excitedly.

He adds: "When I received the offer, it didn't take long for me to say yes. And the icing on the cake is to work alongside Ean!"

Meanwhile, according to Media Prima Audio chief executive officer Nazri Noran, the pairing of the two has its own magic.

"They both have the experience, no doubt about that. But since they both come from different radio backgrounds, what we hope they could bring Fly FM is how to use their experiences to make their show a more unique morning slot.

"As radio announcers of a morning show (which is arguably the most important show on any radio stations), which runs from Monday to Friday, four hours a day, and doing it spontaneously and naturally, over a live broadcast, require a lot.

"We're thrilled when they accepted our offer," says Nazri, who was also from the same company where Ean and Haniff were previously attached to.

"Bringing Ean and Haniff to Fly FM is a bold statement that brings together what is essentially Malaysia's best English radio line-up. We are excited for what's to come with Ean and Haniff, now and into the future!" chips in Fly FM's content director Sean Matjeraie.

Tune in to "EH! It's Ean and Haniff on the Fly Breakfast" every weekday morning from 6am to 10am for a show packed with laughter, surprises and great Malaysian vibes. Highlights to look forward to include their wake-up call segment, "EH! Bangun Lah!", adding a dramatic twist to fans' mornings, and "6 Degrees of Separation", attempting to connect with the biggest international personalities.
