AT 57, singer Alina Hassan embraces the challenge of competing with younger talents.
The veteran singer is among the most senior contestants in the Top 100 list of TV3's reality show 'Calpis Soda One in a Million' (CSOIAM).
Known for her hits 'Gelombang' and 'Dingin', Alina's inclusion in the show has sparked interest, proving age is no barrier to pursuing one's passion.
Reflecting on her achievement, Alina expressed surprise at making it to the Top 100, competing alongside younger talents.
A former champion of the 'Sinaran Pasport Kegemilangan' competition in 1996, Alina is determined to secure a spot in the final 12 and compete in the eight-week-long programme.
"I was shocked when I passed the audition, especially since I sang older songs.
"It's humbling yet inspiring to be here," she told 'Berita Harian'.
Alina was met at the Top 100 announcement event in Jiospace, Petaling Jaya, recently.
"I don't feel shy about participating. I have the experience, but I approach this as a personal challenge rather than resting on my past achievements."
Alina said her 1996 win was not something to boast about.
Instead, she will focus on staying authentic and doing what she loves.
A NEW CHALLENGE
Asked about her motivation for joining CSOIAM, Alina said she wanted to push her boundaries and was drawn to the prizes.
Winners stand a chance to win RM500,000, a car worth RM200,000 and a two-year exclusive recording contract with Alternate Records & Talents.
"At first, I didn't intend to join. But when I saw the rewards, I thought, why not? More importantly, I wanted to see if people still appreciate my voice after all these years."
Alina's audition video went viral, with many praising her timeless vocal talent and reminiscing about her previous performances.
"I told myself, if the programme has no age limit, then I should try. Alhamdulillah, I succeeded. I believe there's a lesson in this journey, regardless of the outcome."
HUSTLE AND RESILIENCE
Since 2020, Alina has been earning a living through busking, showcasing resilience in adapting to life's challenges.
"I've done everything, from busking to working as a cleaner and a personal shopper. It's all honest work."
Currently, she busks at a café in Wangsa Melawati six days a week, supplementing her income with occasional singing invitations.
Despite her struggles, Alina's passion for music remains steadfast.
She released her self-titled album in 1997 under Ambang Klasik Sdn Bhd, featuring ten songs.
FRESH FORMAT
The singing competition, which first gained popularity in 2006, returns with a revamped format.
The new season will air on TV3 from Dec 22 to Feb 9, promising excitement and entertainment.
Alina's participation has already created a buzz, with fans eagerly anticipating her next performance.
Her journey serves as a reminder that dreams have no expiration date.
