KUALA LUMPUR: A consortium comprising Toshiba Corp and international companies, has won an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for a 2,000 megawatt ultra-super-critical coal-fired power generation project in Jimah, Negeri Sembilan.

The international companies include IHI Corp, Hyundai Engineering Co, Ltd and Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co Ltd., Toshiba Corp said in a statement today.

"The EPC Contract was signed with a special purpose company established by Mitsui & Co Ltd and 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), which is wholly-owned by the Minister of Finance Incorporated," it added.

Under the EPC Contract, Toshiba will supply and install two units of 1,000 megawatt ultra-super-critical steam turbine and generators of a high level energy efficiency and the world’s largest class of output.

Toshiba will also supply other main equipment, including plant control equipment, main transformers and the switch yard, despite playing a role in the marine civil work.

Meanwhile, Mitsui and 1MDB were awarded the project and right to construct, own and operate the power plant, and sell the electricity to Tenaga Nasional Bhd under a Power Purchase Agreement.

"The first unit of the project is expected to start commercial operations in 2018, and the second in 2019," Toshiba Corp said.-- Bernama
