IPOH: POLICE believe they have delivered a significant blow to the notorious Mamak Gang with the arrest of one of its senior members on Saturday night.
The 50-year-old man, whom police sources described as the mastermind behind many of the gang’s criminal activities, was detained by police in Greentown here.
The man is also believed to have been trying to reactivate the group in Perak, after a massive nationwide crackdown on the gang by police led to numerous arrests of its members, with the remainders forced to go underground.
Police also detained a 33-year-old woman with the suspect, but were tight-lipped on the link between the two.
The magistrate’s court here yesterday allowed police’s application for a seven-day remand on the two suspects.
They were brought in a van to court under tight security at 10am and escorted by two police patrol cars and an unmarked vehicle.
Sources said the suspect’s arrest was linked to another case, where a 59-year-old man was killed in a shootout with police in Ampang, Selangor, on Nov 25.
