JDT creates history as first Malaysian side to win AFC Cup

DUSHANBE: Darul Ta’zim created history by becoming the first Malaysian side to win an Asian-level football tournament after overcoming Tajikistan’s FC Istiklol 1-0 in the AFC Cup final at Republic Central Stadium today.

Argentine Leandro Velazquez scored with a volley after a poor clearance by Istiklol goalkeeper Nikola Stosic off a corner-kick in the 23rd minute.

It was a frustrating night for Istiklol as they had three goals ruled offside in the 14th, 52nd and 90th minutes by Japanese referee Minoru Tojo.

Darul Ta’zim goalkeeper Farizal Marlias stood out with several fine saves but his teammates also deserved credit for playing a tight game throughout the 90 minutes.

Captain Safiq Rahim was also presented the most valuable player of the tournament award.

The win is club’s second major title of the season after the Malaysian Super League.
