KUALA LUMPUR: Johor Darul Ta'zim made history by becoming the first club to win the Super League title three years in a row after beating Terengganu 3-0 in Johor Baru tonight.
Jorge Pereyra Diaz and Safiq Rahim converted penalties in each half before Diaz added another to ensure Darul Ta'zim built an unassailable 10-point lead over Felda United, who have three matches to play.
No team in the country had ever won the league championship in three successive years since a league system was first introduced in 1979 and Darul Ta'zim have done so without losing any of their 20 league matches.
Fans in Johor were not the only ones celebrating as Malacca clinched the Premier League title after a 1-1 draw with Johor while securing their promotion to the Super League.
At Larkin, left-back Dhiyaulrahman Hasry tripped S. Kunanlan with no need to do so and Argentine Diaz coolly beat goalkeeper Sharbinee Allawee Ramli from the spot in the 29th minute for his 18th league goal.
Sharbinee then clumsily brought down Diaz with Safiq stepping up to make it 2-0 in the 83rd minute.
Diaz sealed the deal three minutes later with a simple finish after getting between two defenders to poke the ball in.
One year on from winning the FAM Cup, Malacca clinched the Premier League title to add to their 1983 League Cup win.
Yashir Pinto scored 14 minutes from time at the Hang Jebat Stadium to hand Mat Zan Mat Aris' side another piece of silverware before Rafael Bonfim levelled in stoppage-time.
The result dropped Johor to third place after Chile-born Palestine international striker Matias Jadue scored the only goal of the game as PKNS edged Armed Forces 1-0 in Temerloh to move up to second and enhance their chances of returning to the top-flight.
A 2-2 draw with DRB-Hicom in Tanjung Malim ensured Sabah are no longer in danger of relegation where Forces will battle it out with Sime Darby and Universiti Teknologi Mara to avoid dropping to the FAM Cup.
