Gerakan hails 1Razak Mansion project, says gov't provides quality, affordable housing

KUALA LUMPUR: Gerakan vice-president Datuk Dr Dominic Lau said the 1Razak Mansion project, which is benefitting Malaysians of all races, especially the Chinese, shows that the government is impartial in helping the people.

He said it also shows that the government is attentive to the fact that Malaysians deserve decent, quality housing at a price they can afford.

“The 1Razak Mansion is a fine example of how people with low and moderate incomes are provided housing and economic opportunities, especially in urban areas.

"If home ownership continues to remain out of reach for most low and moderate income-earning households, this would lead to population displacement and weak communities which lack equity development,” he said in a statement today.

Lau also noted that the government can only construct and maintain affordable housing that people need if they have faith in the ruling coalition.

With support from the people, projects can be formulated, approved and implemented faster.

He said they should not be easily swayed by the Opposition, which goes against whatever the government tries to do for the people, much against the spirit of cooperative federalism.

“This has unnecessarily prevented the few Opposition states from meeting the challenge of urban housing,” he said.

Lau added that Gerakan, on its part, will continue to encourage the people to speak out on their need for affordable housing.

He said the party will mobilize its representation in Barisan Nasional to highlight housing needs front and centre, and ensure that the relevant government agencies take action.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak handed house keys to 658 residents who were the original occupants of the Razak Mansion flats in Jalan Sungei Besi.

The public housing scheme underwent a complete redevelopment under the 1Razak Mansion project, which started in 2014.
