Cops detain 'kerambit' footballer, girlfriend

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have detained a 22-year-old man and his girlfriend following an incident where he allegedly brandished a "kerambit" during a football match at KLFA Football Centre here on Monday.

Wangsa Maju police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Lazim Ismail said police arrested the man, believed to be an upcoming football player, and his 21-year-old girlfriend at his house in Klang at 6.30 yesterday.

Lazim said a team from the district's Criminal Investigation Division questioned the couple before the suspect admitted to using a kerambit in self-defence during the match.

"The case is being investigated under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Dangerous Weapons Act 1958," he said in a statement today.

He said the man has been remanded for four days, starting today, while the girlfriend was detained for not possessing valid travel documents under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
