BUKIT KAYU HITAM: Shafiqa Shafie had a narrow escape today when a trailer lorry crashed into the porch of her home in Taman Desa Bayanmas here, missing her by mere metres.
Overcome with emotion, the 37-year-old homemaker recounted the most terrifying moments of her life in the 2.30pm incident today.
Describing her survival as a miracle, Shafiqa expressed deep gratitude to God for granting the protection she had been praying for each day.
"Every day I pray for my safety. I wasn't expecting that this would happen but Alhamdulillah, Allah protected me today," she said when met at the scene, as tears streamed down her face.
Shafiqa said she acted swiftly upon hearing the loud screech of a trailer's brakes, which ultimately spared her from the crash's debris.
She was home alone during the incident as her husband, Mohd Shahrul Md Wazir, 35, a lorry driver, was away at work.
"I was in my room when it happened. I heard the brakes and peeked out the window to see the truck almost at my doorstep.
"I ran to the kitchen for safety. Once I realised the trailer had stopped, I rushed outside to get help from my neighbours.
"Debris from the crash fell into my bedroom. Alhamdulillah, I acted quickly to avoid it," she said.
Shafiqa's mother-in-law, Jerina Halil, 62, expressed relief Shafiqa was unharmed.
"I'm thankful to God that my daughter-in-law is safe. I believe angels were protecting her. The only losses were damage to the front of the house, our car, and a motorcycle," said Jerina, who lives nearby.
She claimed accidents involving trailers were common in the neighbourhood and residents have lodged several complaints regarding their safety.
"There are many container trailers passing through here, and it's a constant concern for us.
"Numerous accidents have happened. The neighbours are planning to build a wall to prevent trucks from causing damage if another accident occurs," she claimed.
Meanwhile, Kubang Pasu police chief Superintendent Rodhi Abu Hassan confirmed police had received a report about the crash.
"The accident involved a car and a motorcycle parked at the house.
"So far, only the trailer driver, a Thai national, has suffered minor injuries. The trailer has been seized while the driver is being held for drug tests," he said.
He added that a full report would be released after the investigation is completed.
