Police looking for individual who abandoned baby boy in Pendang

PENDANG: Police are looking for an individual believed to have abandoned a baby boy in Kampung Rambai, Pendang, today (Oct 8).

Pendang police chief Deputy Superintendent Roslan Mat said police were informed of the abandoned baby at 8.08am.

He said the baby was found in a box, with its umbilical cord attached. Police believe the baby was abandoned within 12 hours of being born.

"The baby was wrapped in cloth inside the box and left by an irresponsible individual with the intention to conceal the birth.

"The baby was then taken to Pendang Hospital for treatment and confirmed to be in good health," he said in a statement today (Oct 8).

Roslan said the case had been reported to the Social Welfare Department.

He said an investigation under Section 317 of the Penal Code for concealing childbirth had been opened and urged those with information to contact police.

According to media reports, elderly couple Mahmud Lebai Salleh, 77, and Che Som Saad, 75, found the baby boy in a box left in front of their stall.

They initially thought they heard a kitten's cries.
