Cops nab 10 Myanmar migrants after high-speed chase

TUMPAT: Police arrested 10 illegal Myanmar migrants, including a girl, after the Perodua Alza they were travelling in, skidded in a high-speed chase here last night.

Tumpat police chief, Assistant Commissioner Mohd Khairi Shafie, said the 10 were detained at Kampung Bechah near Temalang.

He said a police patrol car crew had earlier spotted a suspicious-looking driver in a Perodua Alza at Jalan Terbak here at 7.40pm and told its driver to stop for an inspection.

"The driver, however, sped off toward Wakaf Bharu. The police party then chased the vehicle. During the high-speed chase, the Alza rammed into a few vehicles parked along the roadside before it skidded and stopped at a road shoulder.

"The driver, however, fled into some nearby bushes. Police found 10 foreigners in the vehicle," he said in a statement.

Khairi said an initial investigation showed that the seven men, two women and the girl, all from Myanmar, did not have valid travel documents to enter Malaysia.

"Further checks on the vehicle showed that its registration number was fake," he added.

He said the illegal immigrants were being held at Tumpat police station for further action.
