Man killed in parang attack at Tawau plantation

TAWAU: A 66-year-old man died after being attacked with a parang at a plantation house near Jalan Sing Ho, Merotai Besar, yesterday afternoon.

The victim suffered fatal wounds on both the left and right sides of his head.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Jasmin Hussin said police received a report about a fight at 1.45pm at the Bombalai police station.

"A team from the Criminal Investigation Department and Bombalai police station was sent to the scene and arrested the suspect," he said today.

Police also seized the parang believed to have been used in the attack.

Initial investigations revealed that the suspect was a 33-year-old undocumented plantation labourer.

The victim's body was sent to Tawau Hospital for a post-mortem.

The incident was believed to have been triggered by a dispute that escalated into a fight that turned fatal.

"The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for not having valid identification documents to stay in Malaysia.

"The suspect is being detained under Section 51(5)(b) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for further investigation," Jasmin added.
