No M'sian affected by Newcastle incident; citizens urged to stay vigilant

PUTRAJAYA: The Foreign Ministry confirmed today that no Malaysian was affected by an incident in Newcastle, England, in which a car rammed pedestrians during an Eid celebration and injured six people.

In a statement, the ministry advised Malaysians residing in the Westgate Road area of Newcastle to remain vigilant and obey instructions from the local authorities.

"The High Commission of Malaysia in London is in close contact with the local authorities, who are providing timely updates to the city’s Malaysian community on the incident," the statement read.

At noon yesterday, six people, three of them children, were injured when a car mounted a curb and ploughed into a crowd of people outside a sports centre.

The incident took place when Muslim worshippers were leaving the Newcastle Central Mosque after Eid prayers.

It was reported that the 42-year-old female driver, who had gotten into her car after the prayers, pressed the accelerator instead of the brake. She was arrested.

The ministry said that in an emergency or for further information, Malaysians can contact the High Commission at +44 (0) 207 242 4308 or through email at mwlondon.kln@1govuc.gov.my.

The Foreign Ministry expressed its deepest sympathies to the families of the victims.
