Raub flood triggers landslides, cuts off Orang Asli village

KUANTAN: An Orang Asli village in Raub has been left marooned after the main road connecting it to the outside world was cut off by several landslides triggered by heavy rain on Sunday.

The road is now impassable to all vehicles, which effectively leaves the 71 residents of Kampung Orang Asli Sungai Kelit isolated.

A Civil Defence Force spokesman here said the Public Works Department is currently working to clear the landslides which hit several points along a 4km stretch of the road.

Meanwhile, Pahang’s Civil Defence Force director Zainal Yusof said the number of flood evacuees in Raub, which was hit by floods early today, has dropped from 68 victims at noon to 38 people as of 6pm.

He said 10 victims are taking shelter at a surau in Cheroh; two people are at a community hall in Kampung Ulu Sungai; and 26 others are at the Kuala Semantan community hall.

"The victims were evacuated after the Sungai Lipis burst its banks following incessant heavy rain since Friday.

“Although it is still raining in certain areas of Raub, some of the victims have chosen to return to their homes and begin the clean-up process," Zainal added.
