KUALA LUMPUR: A pregnant woman who fell on the tracks at the Damai LRT station this morning was saved, thanks to the station’s emergency system.
In the 7.48am incident, the woman, 26, was waiting for a train to go to work when she stumbled and fell onto the tracks as a train was pulling up to the platform.
Fortunately, the PIES (Platform Intrusion Emergency Stop) system kicked in and automatically brought the approaching train to a halt.
The PIES system stops any approaching train when it detects a foreign object on the tracks.
Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Khairani Mohamed said auxiliary policemen on the scene cleared the platform of passengers to conduct rescue work.
“Fire and Rescue Department personnel as well as paramedics who arrived at the scene spent seven minutes to provide emergency treatment before bringing the woman to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital,” said Khairani.
Khairani said the PIES system cuts off flow of electricity to the LRT system when it detects an impact of 7kg or more on the system’s plate.
The system is installed at all stations along the Kelana Jaya LRT route, except for the underground stations. He said the installation of the system is ongoing at the Ampang and Sri Petaling lines and are expected to be completed by year-end.
“We are grateful that the safety system at the train and station functioned perfectly. The PIES system is installed in many urban rail systems worldwide,” he said.
He said the Kelana Jaya LRT line resumed normal operations at 8.15am after a delay of 25 minutes due to the incident.
