SEREMBAN: A trailer lorry laden with 35 barrels of nitric acid overturned at Km270.5 of the North South Expressway (north bound) near the Seremban Rest and Recreation (R&R) area here, today.
It is understood that two of the barrels were damaged in the incident and leaked an unspecified amount of the hazardous material onto the highway, Bernama reported.
The accident occurred at 5am as the trailer lorry, which had broken down as it was travelling on the NSE, was being towed by a tow truck.
However, the rope connecting the truck to the lorry snapped, causing the larger vehicle to overturn and spill the barrels it was carrying onto the road.
Seremban Fire and Rescue Station head Mohamad Idris said the station was informed of the incident at 5.09am and deployed a team from the Hazardous Material (Hazmat) unit to the location.
He added that the team took about two hours to clear the road of the acid, and that the case has been handed over to the Department of Environment for further action.
No one was injured in the incident.
