IT was just over two months ago that the Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland excitedly announced the birth of a rare Malayan tapir in their compound.
The male calf was born on January 31. His parents are Sayang and Mowgli.
Sadly though, the Edinburgh Zoo announced yesterday that the baby tapir passed away after a short illness.
In February, the zoo carried out a public vote to select a name for the baby tapir. The results saw it being named Megat.
"We're very sad to announce the loss of Megat, our Malayan tapir calf. Already a favourite with our staff, members and visitors, Megat passed away in April after a short illness," the Edinburgh Zoo said.
Tapirs are an endangered species and the Royal Zoological Society of the Edinburgh Zoo has been active in its conservation breeding programme.
The zoo has welcomed eight tapir calves since 2007.
On Twitter, where the zoo posted about Megat's passing, several Netizens responded with videos they had captured of Megat while visiting the zoo.
"Terrible news. My daughter will be devastated. So tough on all the keepers, vets and other staff as well," said Graeme Downie.
Twitter user @articeddie shared a video of Megat with the message, "Such a shame, only saw her (sic) two weeks ago."
