Penang island's low lying areas hit by flash floods

GEORGE TOWN: Several low lying areas in Penang's northeast district here were hit by flash floods today following a two-hour downpour.

Affected areas include Jalan Kebun Lama, Kampung Masjid, Kampung Makam and Jalan Makloom.

The worst hit area was Jalan P Ramlee with homes inundated by knee-deep floodwater.

Sungai Pinang broke its banks due to the downpour and villagers were spotted moving their vehicles to higher ground.

Police and Civil Defence Force (APM) were forced to close the stretch.

Despite the flood, no one has been evacuated to nearby relief centres.

Kebun Bunga assemblyman Jason Ong Khan Lee made a live video about the flood at Jalan Batu Gantung.

"Torrential rain causes muddy and murky water flowing into the house.

"We will request the MBPP (Penang Island City Council) to clear the stones spread on the road from the nearby earthworks," he said.

Jalan P Ramlee resident Yusof Syarif, 57, said he was breaking fast with his fast when the water started to seep into the compound of his house.

"Thankfully, it did not enter the house. Or else, we would have had a hard time breaking fast today," he said when met at his home today.

The water subsided by 9pm.
