Fire at Morib church after alleged cable theft

KUALA LANGAT: A church in Morib was razed in a fire tonight which saw 80 per cent of the building engulfed in flames.

Prior to the fire, the church management had claimed their premises was broken into by thieves who were said to have made off with electric cables.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department deputy director of operations Hafisham Mohd Noor said fire and rescue personnel arrived at the Banting Mar Thoma Syrian Church at 7.45pm after receiving a call from a member of the public about the fire.

"Initial investigation found that the fire involved a Class A church building and firemen managed to put the fire out. No one was injured as the church was closed at the time of the incident.

"The last person to leave was the church's caretaker at 7pm. The caretaker was with the police because there was an incident of electric cable theft before the fire," he said when contacted.

Meanwhile, Kuala Langat district police chief Supt Azizan Tukiman when contacted confirmed both incidents.

He said further investigation would be conducted once the fire and rescue department completed their investigation into the cause of the fire.

Asked if both incidents involved the same people, he said police investigation was ongoing with the help of the fire and rescue department's forensics team.
