SUKE flyover collapse: 2 factory workers killed, 3 others injured

KUALA LUMPUR: Two of the four female factory workers involved in the Sungai Besi-Ulu Klang Expressway (SUKE) flyover collapse have died.

The remaining two women, and the male driver of the van they were travelling in sustained injuries in the incident which happened along the Middle Ring Road 2 here today.

The victims are all Malaysians, aged between 30 and 45. They were believed to be on their way to work when the incident happened.

Kuala Lumpur Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department chief Assistant Commissioner Zulkefly Yahya said the van driver was pulled out from the debris at 8.50pm.

The Fire and Rescue Department, he added, extricated the female passengers between 9.15pm and 9.27pm.

"The survivors were sent to the Canselor Tunku Mukhriz Hospital for treatment," said Zulkefly at the scene tonight.

He said the trailer lorry driver, who had reportedly caused the incident when his vehicle rammed into an iron scaffolding, was at the Sungai Besi police station where a report over the incident has been lodged.

"Based on preliminary information we received so far, the trailer lorry which was carrying iron materials was not overladen. There was also an escort car ahead of the trailer lorry," he said.

Projek Lintasan Sungai Besi-Ulu Klang Sdn Bhd, the developer of the SUKE, which is still under construction, had earlier said the incident occurred when the trailer rammed into an iron scaffolding.

It had also said the trailer was overladen.

The lorry trailer, it said added, was not involved in the construction of SUKE.
