Johor looking to upgrade facilities at Kukup International Ferry Jetty

PONTIAN: The Johor government is looking into the proposal to upgrade facilities at the Kukup International Ferry Terminal Jetty near here, to boost the economy of the local community.

Menteri Besar Datuk Hasni Mohammad said various facilities including a duty-free complex and hotels could be built in the area in an effort to turn Kukup into an iconic tourism spot and put it on par with other entry points in the state.

"We may add more (facilities), not just the customs and immigration complex.

"If there is a proposal to make a jetty in Desaru (in Kota Tinggi) a duty-free zone, why not in Kukup? If other entry points have facilities sucha as a three- to five-star accommodation, why not in Kukup?," he said.

He said this at the presentation ceremony of the Temporary Occupation Licence (TOL) for cage-fish breeders in Kukup, near here on Friday night.

Present was Deputy Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Jeck Seng, who is also Tanjung Piai member of parliament.

Hasni, who is Benut assemblyman, also gave the assurance that all the development efforts would be done without changing the existing attractions in the Kukup area which is famous for its cage fish farming. -- BERNAMA
