Mukhriz asks Kedah govt to explain stand on Sg Petani race circuit

SUNGAI PETANI: Jerlun Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir today asked the Pas-led Kedah government to explain its stand over the international race circuit project planned for Sungai Petani.

Mukhriz, who is also Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang) president, said the state government should explain its plan as the project received a RM20 million allocation from the federal government 10 years ago.

"The youths in the state have been anticipating for the project for 10 years now.

"The onus is on the state government to explain what its stand on the project is," he told reporters while attending a walkabout session in Tanjung Dawai, as part of Pejuang's tour in the Merbok parliamentary constituency today.

He added that the state government should also explain the status of the RM20 million allocation channelled by the federal government to Kedah a decade ago.

"Yes, the RM20 million was small compared to the whole project cost, but we want to know where the money is now.

"I raised this issue at the state legislative assembly sitting last month, asking why the current state government has not proceeded with the project but the state administration did not provide any clear answers," he said.

He added that project was planned as an international-standard circuit from the beginning.

"At the planning stage, the project was planned as an international circuit, at least for Asean level to function as a feeder to the Sepang International Circuit," he said.

The Sungai Petani race circuit was mooted by Kedah government in 2014 when Mukhriz was then Menteri Besar.
