Groom's brave effort earns him place in Wira Merah book of heroes [NSTTV]

ALOR STAR: The groom who was seen in a viral video jumping into a river to save a drowning child last Friday, has since had his name included in the Wira Merah book of heroes.

Local farmer, Mohd Anuar Ahmad, 34, said he did not expect his natural instincts to save the drowning child would be honoured by the Fire and Rescue Department.

"I am grateful and honoured to receive this hero's welcome and these souvenirs. This is such a pleasant surprise," he said after receiving the token of appreciation from state Fire and Rescue Department director Sayani Saidon today.

During the 6.45pm incident on Friday, Mohd Anuar from Gunung Keriang and his bride Norhaslinda Mahmud, 38, were having an outdoor wedding photoshoot at the Sungai Anak Bukit riverbank.

Suddenly they heard frantic cries of a mother whose disabled child was drowning in the river after slipping from the riverbank.

Without hesitation, Mohd Anuar leaped into action by diving into the river to save the seven-year-old boy.

A 29-second video posted on TikTok of the heroic groom in his wedding attire, went viral on social media, earning him praises from netizens.

"I did not expect to receive this honour as the only thing on my mind at that time was to save the boy," said Mohd Anuar.

It turned out that it was the second time the farmer had rescued a drowning victim.

"I saved another child years back while picnicking in Bukit Wang, but I can't remember when exactly and I am grateful I also managed to save the second child in Anak Bukit on Friday," said Mohd Anuar who was accompanied by his wife.

Meanwhile Sayani said the ceremony was held to honour and recognise Mohd Anuar's heroic act.

"We would like to express our appreciation and congratulations to the brave groom for his courageous act in saving the child.

"He should be hailed as a model citizen for his bravery and selflessness," she said after announcing that Mohd Anuar's name was listed in the Wira Merah book.

"This book contains records of all the brave men and women who have helped the Fire and Rescue Department save those in danger," she said.

Sayani hopes the public would be motivated and inspired by Mohd Anuar's selflessness and bravery.
