80,000 accounts in Kedah affected by water disruptions due to collapsed irrigation canal

ALOR STAR: The number of consumers affected by water disruptions due to collapsed irrigation canal in Sungai Bukit Pinang, Pokok Sena yesterday, had surged to 80,000 accounts in four districts.

Syarikat Air Darul Aman (Sada) said the incident had given the state-owned company no other option but to temporarily shut down four of its Water Treatment Plants (LRAs) compared to two LRAs reported earlier yesterday.

"The incident has forced the operations of LRA Bukit Pinang, LRA Pokok Sena, LRA Jenun Lama and LRA Jenun Baru to be temporarily shut down.

"This has resulted in an unscheduled water supply disruption involving 80,000 accounts in Kota Setar, Pokok Sena, Pendang and Yan beginning 4.15pm," the company said in a statement.

Sada said it had immediately activated its headquarters Operations Room and consumers were urged to contact 04-7408976 for any enquiry or Sada Information Centre's hotline at 1300 88 0017.

"Sada truly understood the predicaments faced by the consumers due to the water supply disruptions and wish to apologise for the inconvenience caused," read the statement.

The public are urged to get updates on the water supply disruptions via Sada's official Facebook page and its website at www.sada.com.my.

It was reported on Monday that over 75,000 accounts under Sada were affected by water supply disruption after an irrigation canal bund belonging to the Muda Agricultural Development Authority (Mada) collapsed.

Last night, Mada chairman Ahmad Tarmizi Sulaiman said temporary repairs on the collapsed irrigation canal in Sungai Bukit Pinang to begin immediately.

He was reported as saying the agency was working with Sada to build a temporary barrier to regulate the water level at the Terusan Tengah irrigation, adding that heavy rainfall at the Sungai Padang Terap catchment on Sunday had caused Mada's Lengkuas Sifon overflow structure to overflow, leading to the structure failure.
