KUALA LUMPUR: Several parts of Klang and Shah Alam have been hit by flash floods following continuous downpour since 10pm on Wednesday.
Among the areas affected are Seksyen 13, Seksyen 22, Padang Jawa, I-City, Bukit Lanchong, and Taman Sri Muda in Shah Alam, while in Klang, flooding was reported in Taman Sentosa, Kota Raja, Taman Sri Andalas, Taman Chi Liung, and GM Klang.
Bernama today reported that several residents of Taman Sri Muda, Shah Alam evacuated their homes as soon as the water level began to rise due to heavy rain last night.
Residents in surrounding areas had also moved their vehicles to higher ground, it said.
"The Selangor Fire and Rescue Department is inspecting the situation and has started operations in the areas involved.
"Further developments regarding the flood situation will be communicated from time to time," Bernama quoted its director Norazam Khamis as saying.
The Department of Irrigation and Drainage had warned that some rivers in Selangor could exceed dangerous levels if the heavy rains continue.
According to incumbent Klang member of parliament (MP) Charles Santiago, the areas are submerged in water as high as at least two feet.
"It's 48 hours to the polling day. Where is @sprgovmy (the Election Commission's) flood SOP (for polling day on Saturday)?," he asked, adding that he had been receiving numerous calls from people in Klang who are upset and worried about the rain and floods.
"We were hoping this wouldn't happen. It's worrying that @metmalaysia has predicted heavy rain till 4am.
"While it's good to see MB @AmirudinShari & @ganabatirau1 on the ground, the government needs to urgently activate its emergency services to respond to people's need. Families have sent out help alerts to move their parents to higher floors," Santiago wrote on Twitter.
Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari made his way to Taman Melawis, Klang at 2am today to survey the flood situation.
"At 2.45am, I headed to Taman Melawis to check on the flood situation along with the Klang Municipal Council, the JPS and the residents' association.
"A flood mitigation project is underway (for the area) but is facing difficulties. I will contact KTM tomorrow to solve this problem," he tweeted.
Netizens took to social media early morning to share clips of floodwaters seeping into their houses in the affected areas.
"Klang, flooded, yet again! We are fed up!! What has our government done to mitigate this?! And the election is coming this weekend, like seriously what a timing?," a netizen tweeted.
