Two Kelantan rivers at alert level

PASIR MAS: Continous heavy rain in the state since yesterday caused water levels at Sungai Golok in Rantau Panjang and Sungai Semerak to breach their respective alert level today.

At 10.45am, the water level at Sungai Golok stood at 7.70m, which is 0.70m above its alert mark, whereas Sungai Semerak stood at 7.01m, 0.01m above its alert mark.

Other rivers in the state, however, remained stable.

The heavy rain also caused several low-lying areas in Pasir Mas and Rantau Panjang to be inundated by floodwaters today.

The Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) yesterday issued a forecast with the possibility of floods striking the Pasir Mas district in Kelantan today.

The DID warned that flooding could occur if significant rainfall persists in the Sungai Golok Basin.

The flood forecast is based on a warning of continuous rain from the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).

Among the areas said to be at risk of being struck by floods are Kampung Kubang Pak Hitam, Kampung Tersang, Kampung Tok Deh and surrounding areas.

Others include Lubok Gong, Danau Tok Uban jetty and the surrounding areas, Kampung Bendang Guchil, Kampung Pengkalan Telok, Kampung Gual Pariok and surrounding areas.
