Dipping temperatures in Sik send in the shivers [NSTTV]

SIK: Kedah's Sik district is experiencing a cold wave, with temperatures dropping as low as 19 degrees Celsius in several areas.

Residents were forced to wear thicker clothing and sweaters as they headed out and some said this is the lowest temperature they have ever experienced.

Resident Zaini Abu Bakar, 38, said his family's morning routine had been disrupted by the cold spell for the past few days.

"It has been really cold recently. It's a pity to see the children shivering from the cold in the morning as they head out to school.

"Whenever I send my children to school, I make sure that they wear thick clothes so that they don't get too cold when riding on the motorcycle," Zaini, who lives in Kampung Sungai Siputeh here, said.

Zaini, who works as a rubber tapper, believes that a cold weather means the dry season is just around the corner.

Resident Nurul Asma Ghazali, 35, said she had to prepare hot water for her five-year-old son to shower before being sent to kindergarten.

"It's really cold this morning and it is also very foggy outside.

"This weather has really shaken my children and they are very reluctant to take their bath before going to school. They have to be persuaded to take a bath with hot water," said the mother of three.

Meanwhile, Kedah MetMalaysia director, Muhammad Khalil Abdul Aziz said chilly conditions are normal in this district when the state is in the second phase of the Northeast Monsoon.

He explained that during this period the clouds usually decrease in the area involved.

"Clouds work like blankets that trap heat. When there are no clouds, heat escapes into the atmosphere. This situation will cause people to feel colder than usual," he said when contacted.

Commenting further, Muhammad Khalil said during the period from January to March, states in the north of the peninsula will receive less rainfall.

He said this will result in relatively dry weather and the daily maximum temperature is also expected to increase in addition to the possibility of witnessing haze and even fire.

According to MetMalaysia, Sik is forecast to experience a minimum of 19 degrees Celsius throughout the week, with the maximum temperature at 32 degrees Celsius.
