Cobra takes shelter in Sik kitchen

SIK: A family in Kampung Chong, here, were alarmed by sounds in the kitchen last night and were alerted to the presence of a monocled cobra as they were about to enjoy their dinner.

Sik Fire and Rescue Station chief Assistant Fire Superintendent Zulkhairi Mat Tanjil said the family then contaced the fire station to help catch the snake.

He said the fire station received a call regarding the incident at 10.05pm and a team of members led by Senior Fire Officer II, Sam Khan Prak Prem Keu along with six firemen arrived at the scene of the incident.

"Upon arriving at the location, the reptile was found to be still there and our members conducted the operation with caution because the snake was trying to spray its venom. The cobra also acted aggressively when our members tried to catch it.

"However, the reptile was finally caught using a lure, and it took about five minutes.

"These reptiles usually look for cool places such as bathrooms, house beams, kitchen shelves, bedrooms, under beds and under cushions to shelter," he said when contacted today.

Zulkhairi said that the 1.5 meter long cobra is a dangerous species and its sting can lead to death.

He advised the public to be careful especially during hot weather because it invites the presence of snakes to 'hide' in their homes.
