KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will undergo a monsoon transition phase starting Thursday until mid-May, the Malaysian Metereological Department (MetMalaysia) said today.
MetMalaysia director-general Muhammad Helmi Abdullah said the monsoon transition phase also marked the end of the northeast monsoon that began on November 7, 2022.
"During the monsoon transition phase, the country will receive weak wind from various directions that is conducive to the occurrence of thunderstorms. It usually brings heavy rain and strong winds for a short period of time.
"This would occur mainly in the evening and early at night in most areas in west coast states and some rural areas in the Peninsular, west of Sabah as well as west and central Sarawak," he said in a statement.
These weather conditions, he said, could potentially cause flash floods as well
damage to unsound structures.
Muhammad Helmi advised the public to be extra vigilant during this period and be alert to weather forecasts and warnings issued by the department through its official website, the myCuaca mobile application and social media accounts.
The public can also call the department's hotline at 1-300-22-1638 for further clarification.
