Shah Alam store closes when crowds storm it for RM1 Raya clothing

SHAH ALAM: A clothing store in Section 7 here was asked to close by police when hundreds of people descended on it to buy bargain Hari Raya clothing.

Shah Alam police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim today said the store owner agreed to stop its operations as it had failed to control the crowd even after policemen were deployed to the scene.

Police, he said, had received a complaint about chaos about 10.30am, soon after the store had opened.

"More than 500 people swarmed the store, which had promoted RM1ready-to-wear Muslim clothing. They were pushing, shoving and causing public disorder.

"Due to safety concerns, about 11.45am, the store agreed to stop their operations because they could not contain the crowd.

Iqbal said: "Business owners should refrain from advertising promotions that can confuse people."

The clothing brand had offered a limited number of early birds the chance to buy items at discounted prices.

In one video, a promoter said Baju Melayu was being sold at RM1 a pair for the first few customers and 50 kurtas would be given out for free, and prizes such as phones were up for grabs.

In a clip of the chaos posted on Twitter, which has garnered 350,000 views, shoppers were barging into the store as soon as the doors opened.

Security guards were seen struggling to maintain control. One guard was injured and carried away by a colleague.
