Langkawi boys, aged 6 and 3 crashed mom's car while driving to buy a toy car [NSTTV]

LANGKAWI: Prompted by a driver's reckless driving manner, a group of motorists gave a Toyota Vios a chase, assuming that it was a case of drunk driving.

However, the men had a shock of their life upon approaching the car, shortly after it crashed by the roadside in Jalan Bukit Tangga here late yesterday.

"Where is the driver?" the men were heard asking in a 95 second viral video that was uploaded by Facebook user Muhamad Haji Noh just after midnight.

In the video, a boy, who was clad in red round neck shirt and a pair of jeans shorts was seen standing next to the car, repeating several times that he wanted to go to a shop.

A man was heard as saying in the video: "The driver grazed my car near Ulu Melaka. We thought it was a drunk driver, so we gave it a chase. Where are his parents?"

The boy once again told the men: "I am heading to the shop… I wanted to buy a black toy car," as the adults were having a difficult time to grasp what was happening.

"Sapa bawak kereta? Ni besaq ni bawak kereta?? Astaghfirullah halazim.. (Who drove the car? This little boy drove the car?" a man was heard as saying as he responded in a total disbelief.

Apparently, the boy was not alone. He was driving the car with his three-year-old brother.

According a comment posted by Muhamad, one of the boys had handled the steering while the other sibling was stepping on the accelerator.

The boys had apparently been driving for up to 2.5km from their home before losing control of the vehicle and crashing into a lamp post near Kampung Titi Chanwang.

Another video uploaded in the posting's comment section showed that the car was swerving to the right as a motorcyclist was tailing the vehicle.

In another video, the boys seemed to be clueless, but composed as they were being interviewed by a woman.

"We are going to the shop. Mama (mother) is at home," said the older boy, while his brother replied: "We want to buy the black car."

Meanwhile, Langkawi police chief Assistant Commissioner Shariman Ashari said the district's traffic police received a phone call from the public alerting about the crash at about 11.15pm.

"The crash occurred when the the car travelling from Ulu Melaka towards Kampung Nyior Chabang lost control and crashed into a lamp post near Kampung Titi Chanwang.

"The driver is a minor aged six, who was driving a passenger, his brother aged three.

"Based on investigation, the boy from Kampung Padang Mengkuang was driving the car without his parents' knowledge before it crashed by the roadside in Jalan Bukit Tangga.

"Their father was asleep while their mother had gone into the toilet when the boys sneaked out from the house and drove the car," he said in a statement.

Shariman said the older boy suffered a cut on his chin while his brother escaped unscratched.

The car suffered damages on its front side.

Police have classified the case under Section 43 of the Road Transport Act 1987.
