KUALA LUMPUR: A motorcycle rider was killed this morning after being thrown off an elevated highway flyover while trying to avoid another motorcyclist riding against the flow of traffic.
The Ampang Jaya district police chief Superintendent Mohd Azam Ismail in a statement said initial investigations found that the rider of the Ducati was going through a bend when he swerved to avoid the motorcyclist going against traffic, hitting the left divider before being thrown 30 metres off the flyover.
"The victim was found lying face down near a Sungai Klang SMART control station and was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severe leg injuries.
"Police are searching for the other motorcyclist involved in the incident. Closed-circuit television footage has been identified and is being scrutinised by the authorities."
Azam added that the accident will be investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
He also called for witnesses to come forward to assist in the investigation by contacting Ampang Jaya District Police Headquarters Traffic Investigation officer Inspector Muhamad Yusaiful Muhamat Basir at 011-1307 8348.
Earlier today, a video was shared in the DashCam Owners Malaysia Facebook group showing the rider of the red Ducati trying to avoid an oncoming motorcyclist before losing control.
The post swiftly garnered attention from concerned netizens, who expressed their outrage at the irresponsible behavior of the motorcyclist involved.
Nazri Mohamad, a Facebook user, commented, "The family of the deceased should take legal action (against the errant motorcyclist) and sue!"
Fikri Kasmani remarked, "Driving against the flow of traffic should be classified as attempted murder. It is clear that such reckless behavior results in accidents."
Meanwhile, Nas Khalid, another Facebook user, said that many motorcyclists had been going against the flow of traffic at the flyover to head towards Ampang instead of using a designated U-turn.
"I believe that the errant rider was from the AU3 residences below the flyover. He must have wanted to head to Ampang but was too lazy to use the U-turn provided and went against the flow of traffic," he said.
