Flash floods hit parts of Penang [WATCH]

GEORGE TOWN: An hour-long heavy downpour resulted in flash floods in several parts of the state today.

Among the affected areas on the island were Komtar and its surrounding areas, Jalan Transfer, Jalan Rangoon, Jalan Macalister, Jalan Anson, Jalan Datuk Keramat, Air Itam and Tanjung Tokong.

Even parts of Seberang Prai Utara were not spared when the roofs of houses were blown away due to strong winds and heavy rain.

Floodwaters rose to ankle-level in these areas.

Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng took to his Facebook page to share several photos of the flash floods near Komtar.

There was also a photo of a python being caught at the ground level of the Komtar building.

He said the floodwaters receded just before noon.

Meanwhile, state Fire and Rescue Department director Saadon Mokhtar, when contacted, said they received emergency calls on the freak storm in the Seberang Prai Utara district, which resulted in tens of trees uprooted and roofs of houses blown away.

"Fortunately, there were no victims and no need for evacuation.

"We are monitoring the situation closely," he said.

Saadon also said the uprooted trees had been removed while the owners of the affected houses had received assistance from the state Welfare Department.
