5 teens, boy rescued after being trapped by fast waters in middle of river

NILAI: Five teenagers and a boy playing beside a river here ended up in distress after getting trapped on a rock in the middle of the waterway near Kampung Tebing Tinggi here today.

In the incident around 5pm, the six youngsters were reportedly playing on the banks of Sungai Batang Labu Batu 9 before the water level suddenly rose and the currents became stronger.

Nilai fire and rescue station chief Bakarya Mohd Salleh said they received a call at 5.09pm and reached the scene at 5.25pm.

"A total of nine officers from the Nilai fire and rescue station went to the location and they were assisted by three members of the Volunteer Fire Brigade in Pelegong.

"The six victims, comprising a 10-year-old boy, three teenagers aged 14, and one each aged 16 and 17, were trapped on the river rock due to the strong current," he said today.

The rescuers had to use the "high-line technique" to bring the victims safely over the river with safety jackets.

"All victims were successfully rescued at 6.40pm and handed over to the police for further action.

"We were informed earlier that all victims were playing at the location before heavy rain caused the water level to rise suddenly, trapping them on the rock," he said.
