CHUKAI: A university student was killed while five others were injured after they were thrown out of the multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) they were in when it crashed along the East Coast Highway 2 (LPT2) yesterday.
The deceased, Muhamad Fathol Harris Muhamad Asri, 21, was killed on the spot in the 5.20pm accident.
Three passengers, including driver Ignatius Suren Santhanasamy, 21, Noramirah Syahirah Abdullah, 21, and Nur Farah Shakirah Mohd Hishamuddin, 23 were severely injured.
Two others, Nur Mazni Andri, 21 and Azira Adriana Natasha Amirul Faris, 21, sustained minor injuries.
Kemaman district police chief Superintendent Hanyan Ramlan said the accident occured after the Perodua Alza driven by Suren lost control, before crashing and overturning.
The six, all of whom were returning from a course in Kuantan, Pahang, were thrown out of the vehicle. It is understood that four of the passengers are Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) students.
The injured are being treated at Hospital Kemaman.
The case is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
