KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Cancer Prevention Association is embarking on an ambitious fundraising initiative aiming to raise RM400,000 through a unique project involving a backward climb of Mount Kinabalu.
Its advisor Lawrence Imoi said the project, known as "Kinabalu Jasamu Dikenang," would see climber Edward Taning undertaking the challenging task.
The climb is scheduled to take place from Sept 3 to 8.
Edward will ascend to the summit from Timpohon Gate and then descend back to the starting point while walking backward.
"This effort aims to meet our funding needs, and our goal is to raise RM400,000 from this project," said Lawrence.
"The funds will support our activities, including cancer awareness programmes and contributions to the Cancer Patient Lodging House in Kingfisher. This facility serves cancer patients from across Sabah who come for treatment at the Sabah Women and Children's Hospital," he said after a courtesy visit to the Head of State, Tun Juhar Mahiruddin, at Istana Seri Kinabalu yesterday.
Lawrence, who was accompanied by the association chairman Daipah Mosikin, expressed gratitude for the support given by Juhar and called for public support for the initiative.
"Kinabalu Jasamu Dikenang" marks Edward Taning's fourth backward walking project. His previous achievements include walking backward to the summit of Mount Kinabalu from Inanam in 1992, walking backward from Sandakan to Kota Kinabalu in 2009, and from Lahad Datu to Penampang in 2012.
