Crack meter installed on SPE's Jalan Cheras flyover

KUALA LUMPUR: A crack monitoring meter has been installed on the structure of Setiawangsa-Pantai Expressway (SPE) flyover in Jalan Cheras.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said it was a proactive measure to ensure the safety of the structure.

"Together with the Works Ministry team, the Malaysian Highway Authority (MHA) and the SPE concessionaire, I personally went up a 16.1m crane to closely inspect and touch the alleged crack on the flyover pillar.

"The concession company and professional engineers present confirmed that there were no cracks in the pillar.

"Although satisfied, I still directed that a 'crack monitoring meter' be installed on the involved pillar to detect any movement or cracks," he said in an X posting today.

He said the device would be installed for a month to monitor the condition of the pillar and the MHA would subsequently prepare a report.

He assured all road users that the route is safe to use.

"Thank you also to the public for reporting the issue. In line with the MYJalan spirit upheld by the ministry, I hope the community will continue to work with us as eyes and ears in highlighting any infrastructure damage issues.

"As I always emphasise, there is no compromise when it comes to the lives of the people," he said.

Yesterday, the New Straits Times reported that MHA and the SPE concessionaire had been instructed to immediately inspect the visible cracks on the structure of a flyover on Jalan Cheras.
