NILAI: Policemen saved a man from being permanently disabled after his attempt at repairing a motorcycle on a highway went awry.
In the 7pm incident, the 40-year-old victim reportedly severed three fingers on his right hand while repairing a motorcycle that had broken down along the North-South Expressway en route from Muar to Kuala Lumpur.
Nilai police chief Superintendent Abdul Malik Hasim said the victim sought help from his cousin to take him to the hospital, but the latter's car had engine issues.
"At that time, a patrol car from the Nilai police headquarters driven by Corporal Mohd Rizad Roshlan and Corporal Mohd Hazuan Azari Zakaria was stopped by a man while they were passing through the Nilai 7 Industrial Area.
"The man told them that his cousin had severed three fingers while repairing a motorcycle on the expressway and had to be taken to the hospital."
Abdul Malik said the two police immediately assisted the victim, who was driven to Salam Hospital near Senawang within 20 minutes for further treatment.
"We were made to understand that the victim underwent surgery and was discharged from the hospital yesterday afternoon."
He added that the victim's family expressed their gratitude for the assistance provided by the police.
