Stranded Dutchman rescued from Gunung Machinchang

LANGKAWI: A Dutchman who was stranded for seven hours on Gunung Machinchang was found safe near the Telaga Tujuh Waterfall here early today.

It was reported that Staal Rick, 38, could not find his way down the mountain about 7.30pm yesterday.

Langkawi district police chief Assistant Commissioner Shariman Ashari said a search-and-rescue (SAR) operation was mounted after police were alerted at 7.47pm.

"The SAR operation comprised the police, Fire and Rescue Department and Civil Defence Force.

"The operation was delayed briefly due to rain at the search location.

"The victim was found at 2.50am and brought down to safety."

Shariman advised the public to be cautious when hiking Gunung Machinchang, especially near the Telaga Tujuh Waterfall during the rainy season, and to avoid hiking after 5pm.
