GISB-owned restaurant in Terengganu appears empty

KUALA TERENGGANU: A Global Ikhwan Services & Business Berhad (GISB) Holdings-operated restaurant on Jalan Sultan Zainal Abidin was nearly empty today, with only a handful of customers.

A visit to the outlet showed that only a few customers were having drinks at the premises, and most of the workers appeared to be at least 20 years old or older.

When approached for comments about the allegations levelled at GISB on child exploitation and using children to collect donations, they declined to comment.

Meanwhile, the state GISB representative, when contacted, denied he owned any charity homes in Terengganu.

"The activities carried out by GISB in this state only involve business operations, namely restaurants, retail businesses and bakeries.

"We do not use children as workers but employ youths over the age of 20 to work for us."

He refused to comment on the actions taken by the police yesterday in Selangor and Negri Sembilan.

Earlier, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said police rescued 402 children and teenagers, aged between one and 17, believed to be victims of exploitation, during raids on 20 charity homes in Selangor and Negri Sembilan.

The state's GISB representative also assured that he will be cooperative with the police as well as the Terengganu Religious Affairs Department (JHEAT) to investigate the claims, especially in relation to the activities carried out by those in Terengganu.
