ALOR STAR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has instructed schools being used as temporary flood relief centres to resume their learning sessions from home.
He said Form Five students sitting Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia would be prioritised for in-person classes.
"For Form Five, learning sessions will continue as usual. But for schools serving as temporary flood relief centres, the education minister will make a detailed announcement.
"However, I have emphasised that this should not be an extended school break, but rather (learning sessions) should continue from home.
"I don't want the learning period to be treated as a school break. If classes can't resume at the school, teachers must ensure (students) complete their homework before schools reopen," he said after visiting evacuees at the SMK Agama Kedah temporary flood relief centre.
Present was State Secretary Datuk Seri Norizan Khazali.
Anwar also visited the relief centres at Sultan Abdul Halim Stadium and SK Titi Gajah during his half-day work visit to the state today.
Anwar said he had discussed with Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek plans for the ministry to cover the cost of repairs for schools used as relief centres.
"There is bound to be some damage to schools serving as flood relief centres and I have discussed this matter with the education minister to channel (allocations) immediately.
"Not just schools under the ministry, but also those funded by the state government and private tahfiz schools."
The number of flood victims in the state has risen to 7,877 people from 2,441 families, evacuated to 42 relief centres in six districts up to today.
Of the 42 relief centres currently operating, 37 are public schools under the Education Ministry, schools funded by the state government and private tahfiz schools.
The school session in the state is scheduled to resume tomorrow after a week-long break.
