Man attacked by crocodile while fishing in Kuala Baram

KUCHING: A 59-year-old man is believed to have been attacked while fishing at Batu 4, Kuala Baram near Miri yesterday.

Minggu anak Ikum, 59, is said to have gone down to the riverbank to check the nets he had set earlier that afternoon but did not return home by 5pm.

It is understood that sensing something was amiss, the son of the missing man went to the location after his attempts to contact his father's mobile phone failed.

His son only found his father's belongings on the riverbank. He also found nets belonging to his father were torn and crocodile tracks were discovered on the riverbank.

Worried about his father, the son of the missing man alerted the villagers, and they began searching the surrounding area.

After failing to locate his father, his son lodged a police report before notifying the Fire and Rescue Department at 5.55pm.

A spokesman with the department said a team from the Lutong Fire and Rescue station was deployed to the scene, which is located about 9km away.

"The team, along with members of the public, conducted a search around the riverbank within a one-kilometre radius.

"The man, however, was still unable to be found," the spokesman said adding that search operation will resume in the morning today.
