A mother's anguish: 'Ku Adib was a gentle son'

SUNGAI BULOH: Like his name 'Adib', which in Arabic means 'courteous', 'refined', or 'gentle', Ku Adib Aizad Ku Azmi was a gentle and loving son.

His mother, Hafizah Iszahanid, said Ku Adib had always been an "easy" child.

"From the moment I gave birth to him until now, he was easy and pleasant. My son was a nice person. When I got married, I started praying.

When I gave birth to him, I named him 'Adib', which means 'gentle', and he was just that. I wanted my son to be gentle, obey me, and be smart. And he was all of that.

"But God only sent him to me for 20 years; then He took him back," she said when met at the Raudhatul A'liyah Saujana Utama Muslim Cemetery here today.

Yesterday, Ku Adib and two other students from UiTM Dungun were killed when a Honda CRV SUV, driven by a woman, ploughed into their two motorcycles at 7.20pm.

Aside from Ku Adib, also killed were Khairil Anuar Jamaluddin, 20, and Mohd Akhmal Tukirin, 20, a hospitality major. Ku Adib and Khairil Anuar were accounting students.

Their friend, Mohd Ammar Danish Mohd Rodhuan, 20, who sustained severe injuries, is being treated at Dungun Hospital and will be transferred to the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital, Kuala Terengganu, for further treatment.

Hafizah said Ku Adib had always been diligent, working part-time as a food delivery rider to fund his studies, and putting his Yayasan Selangor loan in his savings account to ease his parents' finances.

"He got a loan from Yayasan Selangor (for his studies), but he didn't use any of it. He worked as a food delivery rider and only spent what he earned from that.

He saved his loan in his Amanah Saham Nasional Berhad account because he said he didn't want to burden us. He had always been like that," she said.

She added that Ku Adib and her were always "on the same wavelength", and could talk about most things, together.

Hafizah was en route to Makkah to perform umrah with her husband, Ku Azmi Saad, when they received the devastating news that their son had been killed.

The couple were part of Media Prima Bhd's 'Program Umrah dan Ziarah 2024'. Hafizah and Ku Azmi immediately took a flight home from Jeddah and arrived at 3.45pm today.

Ku Adib was laid to rest at Raudhatul A'liyah Saujana Utama Muslim Cemetery, while Khairil Anuar was buried at the Ukay Perdana Muslim Cemetery, and Mohd Akhmal in Muar, Johor.

Media Prima Berhad chairman Datuk Seri Syed Hussian Aljunid and New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd group managing editor Datuk Ahmad Zaini Kamaruzzaman attended Ku Adib's burial.

The driver of the SUV, a 49-year-old woman believed to be mentally ill, has been remanded for four days, starting today.
