MUAR: It was supposed to be a December to remember for Azratul Nabila Mohd Yusoff, 30, as her family was supposed to celebrate her son Muhammad Shafiy Mohd Shazreen's second birthday.
That day will not come as Shafiy, or Afiy as he is fondly known, was killed after an accident involving the family's car and a trailer in Bukit Gambir yesterday.
Shafiy was killed on the spot while Azratul, her husband Mohamad Shazreen Sahar, 37, the couple's 5-month-old daughter Amsyar, and Shazreen's brother Redhwan, 44, were injured.
Azratul still does not know that Shafiy died in the accident.
Her sister Azuraini, 42, said Azratul has been asking for her son but they have not broken the news to her.
"We're not ready to tell her that her eldest son is gone," Azuraini told reporters at Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital here.
She said she only found out that the family was involved in the 1:30 pm accident after she received a video about it.
Azuraini said she had tried to contact her sister half an hour before the ill-fated crash but there was no response. It was only hours later that she saw a video about the accident.
"I noticed my brother-in-law (in the video), he was in pain. Then I saw Afiy, he was covered by a cloth, but I recognised his clothes. I could only cry."
The family had gone to visit Shazreen's mother in hospital in KL and were on their way back to their home in Bandar Tenggara when a trailer, traveling on the opposite side of the road, crashed into the family's car.
It is understood the trailer driver fell asleep at the wheel, leading to the accident.
Azuraini said her sister was hesitant to follow her husband to KL as both the children were under the weather.
"I'm heartbroken because my sister waited for over three years to conceive Afiy."
Azratul, Shazreen, and their daughter are being treated in the hospital.
They are in stable condition. Redhwan, who was driving the car, is critically injured and has been put in an induced coma.
